Southwest Florida and Manatee County Chapters of the American Red Cross

The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. I am very familiar with Manatee County. My parents retired to Bradenton, Florida where my mother grew up. As children we visited my grandparents there during school vacations, just as my kids visited my parents at their Bradenton beach house during their school breaks. During one summer I learned CPR and First Aid from the Manatee County chapter of the American Red Cross. After my parents passed, we kept the house as a vacation home. However, I brought back many of the heirloom quality furnishings and rugs to our condo in NYC. One of my favorite items is their beautiful antique oriental rug which we have in our living room. Recently during a dinner party a guest spilled wine  on the rug. We cleaned it up as best we could, but I feared that the stain would remain. Fortunately my wife found a great rug cleaning NYC company that specializes in oriental rugs. One of the principals of the company came that afternoon to assess the damage. He assured us that his rug cleaning team would be able to deal with the stain. He also suggested we restore the fringe and have his restoration weavers fix some worn areas. We agreed to all the work. Two weeks later my parent's rug returned looking amazing. No stain, new fringe, and no worn spots. I will continue to look fondly at that rug conjuring wonderful memories of my parents and their lovely home in Bradenton, Manatee County, Florida.

Through a grant from the Wilson Wood Foundation our vibrant Youth Corps are providing community service activities during the school year. Susan Wood and her husband Tom Faessler attended the youth’s monthly meeting in February. They were treated to a demonstration of the Scrubby Bear costumes worn during the program. This is a short play involving character representing germs, Mr. Soap, Mr. Scrubby Bear and a narrator to teach children how germs are spread, how to prevent the spread of disease and to properly wash their hands.

Two performances were given at the February 5th safety rally.

More Volunteers Needed to Respond to House Fires

The chapter’s Disaster Action Team (DAT) consists of volunteers who respond to the small-scale disasters that happen throughout the year, mainly single-family house fires. We are looking for more of these highly dedicated, dependable people to join the DAT team. The true DAT experience takes commitment, patience, and hard work, but the reward of being the one to help a family rebuild their life is immeasurable. Potential DAT members may start as by going on a 1-week provisional shift to determine if the fit is right. [...]
